The Rant

A former co-worker coined the phrase when I offered to let her listen to one of my sermons on CD. She said, "Sure, I'll listen to Tom rant about Jesus." At first it sounded funny, but the more I thought about it the more it seemed to fit. That's what we, as preachers, pretty much do. We rant about Jesus. In 1 Corinthians 2:2 the Apostle Paul says, "For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified." That's it. Jesus. Who He is, and what He did, and what it means for us. That's my job, or calling, or anointing. To preach Christ. Jesus is in every book of the Bible. The entire volume speaks of Him. If you don't see Jesus, you're looking at it wrong.

So that's what I'm going to continue to do in this forum: Rant about Jesus.

My hope is to Rant every night by 9:00 pm, so check daily for new blogs.

Old Commandment part 4

05/15/2019 19:53
"Old" is a term that we seem to have misunderstood. At the very least we look at it like Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother: "New is always better!" But that's just not the case. Change for change's sake isn't good. And don't get me wrong, sometimes change is necessary. But when we're...

Old Commandment part 3

05/14/2019 19:45
I want to quote our key verse for this Rant series again, but I want to do it in the Message Bible. 1 John 2:7 (MSG), "My dear friends, I'm not writing anything new here. This is the oldest commandment in the book, and you've known it from day one. It's always been implicit in the Message you've...

Old Commandment part 2

05/13/2019 20:04
Its the idea of our "new" (true) nature. Its new... to the point that we didn't understand it, but now we do. Now we can. Its not "new" as in God needed to try and try again. Its new... to you. In the sense that we've always had it, but now we know what we have. Like that idea of money in the bank....

Old Commandment part 1

05/12/2019 19:51
This idea is kind of tricky. Because we look at everything through the lens of our own experiences. Our own selves. So we have this idea in our heads that we started off at the bottom. "I'm just a sinner. That's who I am. That's my nature. And, try as I might, I can't rise above my nature. I'm only...

Exercise part 5

05/11/2019 16:00
I started this Rant series with 1 Timothy 4:8 in the King James version of the Bible. I want to finish it with 1 Timothy 4:8 in the Message Bible, "Workouts in the gymnasium are useful, but a disciplined life in God is far more so, making you fit both today and forever." Everlasting life. Fit...

Exercise part 4

05/10/2019 20:48
Exercise helps you grow. Exercising your faith helps you grow in faith. And in grace. And in mercy. And in love. Ephesians 4:15, "But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ." Growing up in all things. By speaking the truth in love. How do we...

Exercise part 3

05/09/2019 19:48
From what I understand about exercising--and I used to work out, around middle school when I wrestled and played football so many moons ago--the more you do it, the stronger you get. Paul writes kind of extensively about the journey from babes (in Christ) to full blown maturity. And it is a...

Exercise part 2

05/08/2019 20:21
Let me get my memory verse for today out: "For we walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7). A pretty popular verse. Probably right up there with John 3:16, right? But here's what I want to say about it, "You can't walk by faith without... you know... walking." Putting one foot in front of...

Exercise part 1

05/07/2019 20:17
Listen, if you know me you know I've skipped going to the gym... for the past fifteen years. So that's almost certainly not what I'm talking about here. Look at 1 Timothy 4:8, "For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is,...

The Spirit of Truth part 5

05/06/2019 19:54
There is only one memory verse in the Old Testament of the King James version of the Bible that has both the words "Spirit" and "Truth" in it. Psalm 31:5, "Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth." And I've been waiting to use this verse until the end here....
